The rising energy costs have placed people in financial difficulty throughout the UK and, with winter impending, the situation is only set to get worse. In the past few months, we haven’t been required to heat our homes; however, with temperatures set to fall below 10°C in the coming months, the central heating will need to go on. Despite this need, so many people won’t be able to afford to crank up the central heating this winter, as our already elevated energy bills are set to skyrocket even further.

In order to keep our homes warm without breaking the bank, we’re going to have to optimise our property’s insulation. All homes built after 2022 in the UK are required to have at least double-glazed windows and doors. As of 2020, 86.7% of UK properties had full double glazing, so it’s likely that all windows in your home are double-glazed.

If your property is still sporting single-glazed windows, we would recommend upgrading to at least a double-glazed solution. At Diamond Windows, we’ve also taken insulation one step further by providing triple-glazed windows.

What Exactly is Double Glazing?

Double glazing refers to a window that’s comprised of two panes of glass, between which a layer of argon gas is trapped. This layer has 67% of thermal conductivity of air, which makes it a poor conductor of heat. Consequently, warm air is sealed inside your home, resulting in enhanced energy efficiency.

What Exactly is Triple Glazing?

As one can imagine, triple glazing describes a window that contains three panes of glass, and between each of these layers, argon gas is also found. In addition to this inert gas, the mainframe chamber has a thermal insert, which creates smaller chambers and reduces heat loss. Similarly, between every pane of glass sits a spacer bar that’s crafted from thermally optimised insulating material. As a result, heat is unable to escape from around the edge of the sealed unit.

How Does Double/Triple Glazing Work?

As previously mentioned, between the panes of glass in double- and triple-glazed windows, there is a layer of argon gas, which is a poor conductor of heat. Therefore, warm air is prevented from escaping. Meanwhile, the design of the glass reflects the heat back into your home, resulting in less time and money being spent on the heating of your home.

Upgrading your single-glazed, or even your double-glazed, windows is sure to make a significant difference when it comes to the cost of heating your home this winter.

PLANITHERM Glass

All our triple-glazed windows are crafted from PLANITHERM GLASS, the best-selling glass brand in all of Europe. This success comes from the low emissivity glass, which has been developed using the most recent developments in thermally insulating coating technology. Such technology has enabled our windows to achieve an “A” energy rating, making them some of the most energy-efficient solutions on the market.

This efficiency is only enhanced by the transparent metallic coating, which facilitates the capturing of natural daylight. As a result, free energy is obtained, and the home is heated in turn. Similarly, this same coating is what redirects the heat generated by the home back into the room.

Other Insulation Tips

Our windows will be most effective at insulating when paired with other insulation techniques. These include:

  • Floor insulation
  • Wall insulation
  • A new heat pump or boiler
  • Home décor (e.g., thermal blinds/curtains)
  • A smart thermostat
  • Draught proofing (e.g., draught excluders, foam strips, etc.)
  • Loft insulation
